joomla logo100

is an award-winning content management system (CMS), which enables you to build Web sites and powerful online applications. Many aspects, including its ease-of-use and extensibility, have made Joomla one of the most popular Web site software available with approx 16 million sites using Joomla as of 2012. Best of all, Joomla is an open source solution that is freely available to everyone.

What's a content management system (CMS)?

A content management system is software that keeps track of every piece of content on your Web site, much like your local public library keeps track of books and stores them. Content can be simple text, photos, music, video, documents, or just about anything you can think of. A major advantage of using a CMS is that it requires almost no technical skill or knowledge to manage. Since the CMS manages all your content, you don't have to.

Joomla! 3 is scheduled for launch in September 2012.

There are the 3 things you need to know about Joomla 3:

What is great about Joomla 3?  - Mobile.

j-mobileThis is the version that will bring Joomla up-to-speed with the mobile revolution that is taking over the web.

Why is this valuable? It's predicted that, as soon next year, more people will be online via their phone than a desktop. The mobile version of your site may soon be more important than the desktop version.

Joomla 3 is using Bootstrap to make sure that the visitor and administrator areas are mobile-friendly.

Joomla will become the first major content management system to be 100% mobile-friendly by default.

Who is Joomla 3 for? - Early adopters.

Initially, Joomla 3 is best used by early adopters, developers and more experienced users.

You will be able to build sites with Joomla 3 as soon as it is launched. However, as with the first release of most software, there's no need to rush in and use the first version.

I am on Joomla 2.5. What do I do? - You can stay right where you are.

Joomla 2.5 is a wonderful version of Joomla and will be supported until 2014.

Will the upgrade be easy? Yes, the plan is to allow people to upgrade from 2.5 to 3 directly from the administrator area of their site. You will need to check that extensions and templates are ready for Joomla 3 before clicking the Update button. Remember though, you don't need to do that until 2013 or 2014.

If you are on Joomla 1.0 or 1.5, we do recommend that you upgrade to at least 2.5. Joomla 1.0 is 7 years old now and support has ended. Joomla 1.5 will be nearly 5 years old when support ends later this year.
